A Comparative Study of Dissociated Heterophoria and Associated Heterophoria
Cha Jung-Won

Abstract
Purpose: To research the interrelation of results that are obtained from dissociated heterophoria examination using Maddox rod, associated heterophoria examination using Mallett near unit, and various eye symptoms under near work.

Methods: It measured near horizontal dissociated heterophoria, near horizontal associated heterophoria, and scored eye symptoms surveys of 59 test subjects who are university students in twenties, have no ophthalmological disease, no medical history of strabotomy, over 0.9 of corrected visual acuity and with no suppression. Three types of analysis including frequency, difference and correlation were carried out by SPSS 23.0 to understand interrelationship.

Results: There were more test subjects (n = 29) who need prism prescription according to fixation disparity examination using Mallett near unit rather than test subjects (n = 17) who need prism prescription according to Shared¡¯s criterion. Statistically, there is no significant difference between prism prescription result using dissociated heterophoria and associated heterophoria (p = 0.070). It appeared to have correlation significance (p = 0.038) between eye symptom score and Sheard criteria prism prescription result for near. Also, dissociated heterophoria had significant correlations with the result of Mallett examination (p = 0.001), and with the Sheard¡¯s criterion prescription result (p<0.001).

Conclusions: The more the score of eye symptom increases, the more Sheard¡¯s criterion prism prescription result increases. The more the dissociated heterophoria increases, the more Sheard¡¯s criterion prism prescription result and Mallett test prism prescription result increase. Sheard¡¯s criterion could be more useful than Mallett test in prism prescription for heterophoric eyes with symptoms.
